Price check: what to pay before you buy

Look up an item by name or barcode to see its likely sale price and the most you should pay.

Guide 3 min

Tools → Price check tells you what an item is likely to sell for, from your own sales and from eBay, and the most you can pay for it and still make the profit you want. It works well on a phone while you're out sourcing.

Check a price

  1. Open Tools in the menu, then Price check.
  2. Type the item in Item, such as Nintendo Switch OLED. The brand and model work best.
  3. Or use the barcode: type the numbers printed under it in Barcode, or tap Scan to read it with your phone's camera. You can leave Item blank when you use a barcode; Hermes works out the name from eBay.
  4. Pick the Condition, where you'll be Selling on (for its fees), the Shipping you'll pay, any Repairs and parts, and the Profit you want.
  5. Tap Check price.

What you'll see

  • Likely sale price: what buyers are likely to pay, shipping included.
  • Most you should pay: the likely price, less the platform's fees, your shipping, repairs, and the profit you want. If it says Don't buy, it costs more to sell than it's likely to bring in.
  • Your sales: items you've sold with a similar name: the typical price, how long they took to sell, and your average profit. It also tells you if you already have some in stock.
  • On eBay now: current Buy It Now prices on eBay US, shipping included, with a few listings to check they're the same item.

Where the estimate comes from

Once you've sold 3 or more items like it, the estimate is the typical price you sold them for. Until then it comes from eBay: items usually sell for less than they're listed at, so the estimate is 90% of the typical asking price. When both are available you can switch between them.

To see what items actually sold for, tap See sold listings on eBay. It opens eBay's sold results for your search.

Bought it?

Tap Bought it: add item to open Add item with the name filled in and the price check saved in its notes. Enter what you paid and save.
