Privacy and security

How your data is protected, who can see it, and how it's backed up.

Guide 2 min

  • Only you can see your inventory. Every row in the database belongs to one account, and the database itself refuses to show it to anyone else.
  • Passwords are stored as one-way hashes (bcrypt). Nobody, including us, can see your password.
  • eBay: you sign in on eBay's site, and Hermes's eBay access key is stored encrypted. Hermes can read listings and orders but can't change anything on eBay.
  • Payments go through PayPal. Hermes never sees card or bank details.
  • Photos are stored privately; only you can open them.
  • Backups: the database is backed up every night, encrypted, and kept for 30 days. Photos aren't in the backups, so keep your originals.
  • The Idea Lab is shared: other users see ideas, but not who suggested them.
